Thought Traps For Effective Financial Decisions

I have been curious about how our behaviour patterns affect our money management. I have posted “How Your Brain is Sabotaging Your Financial Life” and “How to change your money behaviour” recently.

Money management is all about taking financial decisions in a timely and effective manner. But there are a lot of traps. Sample this for an example:

Common Thought: The abundant information available equips us to make better and informed decisions.

My Response: Really? More information and more alternatives invariably involves additional effort. Selecting one option gets tougher as the number of choice increases. Haven’t we heard of the “paralysis by analysis” syndrome.

Moreover, I think we tend to give more weight to the first information that we receive. Initial impressions or past experiences tend to colour our thoughts too.

Subconsciously, we decide on a particular course of action and then start collecting only that information that supports our choice. We avoid conflicting information.

Btw, I am searching for such research reports that validate what I have written above! :)

Do you agree? Let me know if you read research on money behaviour. Thanks.

On a similar note, “blink” by Malcolm Gladwell is a good read. (not related to finance decisions though).
